Paediatric Nephrology Outpatient Clinic
The Paediatric Nephrology Outpatient Clinic examines and treats 0–15-year-old children who have, or are suspected to have, nephrological disorders. The responsibilities of the outpatient clinic include
- examination and treatment of disorders associated with children’s kidneys and urinary system, like Finnish nephrosis, congenital structural renal anomaly or developmental abnormality, nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, haematuria or epidemic nephropathy
- further investigation of children with a history of urinary tract infections
- treatment and follow-up of children with calcium-phosphate metabolism disorders
- surveillance of children undergoing peritoneal dialysis treatment.
The investigation, prevention and treatment of chronic renal insufficiency in children involves regular visits to the outpatient clinic. The prevention and treatment of malnutrition in these patients is essential and involves co-operation with a nutritionist.
The outpatient clinic is the primary place for diagnostics and treatment. The examinations include various imaging studies, like contrast medium and ultrasound examinations. Diagnostic renal biopsies are conducted on the ward, with the child under general anaesthesia. Patients who need paediatric surgical treatment of the urinary system and urodynamic examinations are treated in co-operation with a paediatric surgeon and a urologist.
