Pirkanmaa Hospital District

We provide special health care and disabled care services and create the conditions for health care research and training. Our operations are based on the following ethical principles: good care, respect for people, appreciating competence and social responsibility. Our work is summarised in our slogan, For Life.

The Pirkanmaa Hospital District is a joint municipal authority owned by 23 municipalities. Our member municipalities are: Akaa, Hämeenkyrö, Ikaalinen, Juupajoki, Jämsä, Kangasala, Kihniö, Kuhmoinen, Lempäälä, Mänttä-Vilppula, Nokia, Orivesi, Parkano, Pirkkala, Pälkäne, Ruovesi, Sastamala, Tampere, Urjala, Valkeakoski, Vesilahti, Virrat, and Ylöjärvi. There are more than half a million residents in the area of the Pirkanmaa Hospital District.

Treatment is provided by the Tampere University Hospital, which includes the following hospitals:

Some of our services are provided by limited liability companies owned by the hospital district. Artificial joint surgeries are performed by Hospital for Joint Replacement Coxa, cardiac patients are examined and treated at the Tays Heart Hospital, and Fimlab Laboratories is responsible for laboratory functions.

Services

The service negotiations between municipalities and hospital districts specify the amount and variety of the services to be provided. These contracts are based on the need for services among the population. In addition, the University Hospital provides services to hospital districts within its catchment area, which include the hospital districts of Kanta-Häme and Southern Ostrobothnia. This means that Tays provides 900 000 Finns with specialised care services.

About 200 000 patients are treated in the hospital district each year. Approximately 75,000 patients are given treatment in wards and about 370,000 in outpatient clinics each year. There are altogether 1,142 beds in the wards of the hospitals in the hospital district. We have approximately 7,000 employees.
