Infectious Diseases

At Tays, we examine and treat patients who have a difficult bacterial, viral or fungal disease that requires special expertise, or who are particularly vulnerable to infections due to immunodeficiencies. We are also responsible for the prevention and monitoring of treatment-related infections in the Pirkanmaa area.

Experts of infectious diseases work in Tays Infectious Diseases Unit. Patients with infection diseases are treated at Tays Central Hospital in infectious diseases outpatient clinic and ward and at Tays Hatanpää Hospital in infectious diseases ward. In addition to this, infection patients are treated in different wards at Tays.

Diseases that we treat include the following, for example:

  • Sepsis
  • Endocarditis (infection of the heart valves and chambers)
  • Bone or soft tissue infection
  • Foreign object infection
  • Spread borreliosis
  • Pneumonia
  • Immunodeficiency and infections inpatients with immunodeficiency
  • HIV
  • Tuberculosis
  • Tropical disease or some other traveller's infection
  • Post-operative infection

Tests and treatment at Tays

The majority of patients with an infection require emergency and ward treatment. In severe cases, intensive care may also be needed.

Laboratory tests and different imaging studies are needed to diagnose and monitor the infection. Infection patients are usually treated with different kinds of microbial drugs. Patients with immunodeficiency may also receive immunoglobulin replacement therapy.

Special expertise at Tays

We monitor and prevent treatment-related infections and investigate and prevent epidemics in the whole Pirkanmaa region. We counsel and train other health care actors in these matters. We train specializing doctors and give lectures on infectious diseases and preventing of treatment-related infections.

The treatment of widespread and purulent infections, serious post-operative infections, refractory tuberculosis, HIV and patients with primary immunodeficiencies is allocated to Tays Central Hospital.
