Musculoskeletal Diseases

At Tays, we study, treat and rehabilitate patients with musculoskeletal diseases. We are also responsible for the study and treatment of injuries caused by accidents. In addition to surgery, patients are treated with drugs and physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

The immediate care of patients who have become injured in accidents, for example, is allocated to Tays Central Hospital. Non-urgent patients are sent to us for an evaluation of treatment from basic health care and regional and central hospitals if the treatment requires university hospital expertise.

Musculoskeletal diseases treated at Tays include the following, for example:

  • bone fractures
  • soft tissue injuries and infections
  • nerve, vein and tendon injuries
  • reattachment of an amputated limb or its part
  • frostbites and burns
  • injuries to skin and soft tissue from accidents
  • bone, connective tissue and supportive tissue tumours
  • back problems
  • joint diseases.

Tests and treatment at Tays

The majority of our patients need surgery. Half of surgeries are emergency surgeries – such cases are, for example, bone fractures, soft tissue injuries and infections. The patient receives an invitation to the planned surgery usually in the treatment of spinal or joint diseases.

The ward treats mainly surgical patients. During ward treatment, imaging and laboratory tests are performed. Depending on the ailment in question, the patient may also receive a plaster, splint or supportive bandage on a joint or limb after surgery. Ward treatment usually lasts for 1–5 days.

The single largest patient group in the ward is elderly people who have fractured their hip by accident. This injury always requires surgery.

The outpatient clinic studies and treats patients whose disease or injury does not require immediate treatment. In these cases, patients arrive by referral, which the patient usually receives from his or her personal physician at the health centre. The patient may also arrive for a treatment evaluation from another hospital or occupational health care. During the outpatient clinic visit, complementing studies may include X-Ray, CT or MRI scans.

Special expertise at Tays

Tays' expertise in hand and microsurgery is nationally acknowledged. We provide treatment for nerve, vascular and tendon injuries as well as fractures and injuries to multiple tissues, for example. Replantation surgery, i.e. the reattachment of an amputated limb or part of a limb was started at Tays for the first time in Finland, and even today, we are responsible for one of the only two hospitals in Finland providing around-the-clock replantation emergency services.

We also have national top expertise in the treatment of sarcoma, i.e. bone, connective tissue and supportive tissue tumours.

We are renewing our operations and facilities

Treatment of musculoskeletal diseases in Tays has, since January 2020, been centralized in the new Musculoskeletal Center in Building D. In our new facilities, our goal is to be more efficient, cost-effective and of better quality.
