Neurological Specialties
At Tays, we treat and study neurosurgical and neurological patients during the acute stage of the disease and problematic situations of long-term illnesses, and we also provide support for the rehabilitation of patients who have lost their functional capacity due to an accident or become disabled.
Neurological specialties include neurosurgery and the study, treatment and rehabilitation of neurological diseases. At Tays, we provide services in all neurological specialties.
Neurological diseases include the following, for example:
- cerebral circulation disorders (strokes)
- cerebrovascular diseases
- brain injuries
- spinal canal tumours and compression states
- episodic and paroxysmal central nervous system disorders, such as epilepsy
- inflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and viral infections of the central nervous system
- degenerative diseases of the central nervous system, such as dementia and Parkinson's disease
- intracranial tumours.
Tests and treatment at Tays
Neurological patients are treated in emergency services around the clock. 40 % of neurological patients come to the units as emergency patients through Accident and Emergency Department Acuta. An on-call neurologist at the Accident and Emergency Department assesses the situation and creates a study and treatment plan.
Wards providing treatment to neurological patients at Tays are the following:
- Acute Neurology Ward 10b
- Stroke Unit
- Neurology and Rehabilitation Ward
- Ward 6a
- Ward 6b
- Paediatric Ward L01 (neurosurgical paediatric patients)
In addition, we treat and rehabilitate neurological patients in the Neurological Ward of Valkeakoski Hospital.
If a patient needs neurosurgical treatment, we perform the procedure in the Neurosurgical Operating Room. After the procedure, treatment of neurosurgical patients continues in the ward 6a or 6b, the Intensive Care Unit, the Paediatric Ward L01 or Acute Neurology Ward NEUR.
At outpatient clinics, we study and treat patients in non-urgent situations. The neurological outpatient clinics at Tays are the following:
- Neurosurgery Outpatient Clinic
- Brain Injury Outpatient Clinic
- Pain Outpatient Clinic
- Neurology Outpatient Clinic
- Spinal Cord Injury Outpatient Clinic
We provide support for the rehabilitation of neurological patients at the Rehabilitation Analysis Outpatient Clinic and the Aids and Appliances Unit.

The neurological specialties at Tays have an interprofessional staff: neurosurgery and neurology specialists or specialising physicians, treatment staff as well as specialised workers such as psychologists, speech therapists, social workers and rehabilitation counsellors. At Tays, we have special expertise in the treatment of the following diseases and conditions, for example:
