Neurosurgery
At Tays, we treat and study patients who have severe brain injuries, brain and spinal cord tumours, cerebrovascular diseases, cerebrovascular disorders, hydrocephaly as well as diseases in the spinal area, such as disc protrusions and erosion. In neurosurgery, we treat patients by surgery or intravascular procedures.
The most common disease groups treated in neurosurgery are the following:
- Intracranial tumours
- Brain injuries
- Cerebrovascular diseases
- Tumours and compression states of the vertebral canal
- Hydrocephaly
- Severe pain conditions
- Motor disorders
- Epilepsy.
Special expertise at Tays
The Neurosurgery Unit of Tays is one of the five neurosurgery units in Finland, in addition to the units in Helsinki, Turku, Kuopio and Oulu. Advanced neurosurgery can only be performed in university hospitals with a high-level intensive care unit and possibility to collaborate with other medical specialties.
At Tays, research is done especially on brain tumours, brain injuries and deep brain stimulation.
