Patient Ombudsman

The patient ombudsman provides information on the patient's rights as well as counsels and gives guidance on how to file a complaint, an official complaint or an application for compensation.

If there is something unclear in your treatment or you are dissatisfied with the care or way the staff have treated you, you can contact the following persons:

  • the persons who treated you
  • the superiors of the persons who treated you, such as the chief physician, chief nurse or ward nurse
  • the patient ombudsman directly.

If the matters cannot be clarified through discussions, you can contact the patient ombudsman at the hospital where you were treated. He or she will provide information on patients' rights. The patient ombudsman can also assist you in filing a complaint, an official complaint or an application for compensation.

The patient ombudsman does not make decisions. The patient ombudsman's services are free of charge.

Patient rights

Patient rights in health and hospital care are defined by the Act on the Status and Rights of Patients. As a patient, your rights include

  • receiving treatment within the time period defined by the Treatment Guarantee
  • good treatment and care in mutual understanding with the parties participating in treatment
  • being able to speak Finnish or Swedish, and your native language when possible
  • receiving information on your health, treatment options and their effects
  • reviewing your own patient histories and requesting corrections to them when necessary
  • confidentiality of your health information
  • the right to decline from treatment
  • your treatment will being implemented
  • the opportunity to freely choose your place of treatment.

Services are primarily provided by telephone and email. It is not recommended to send sensitive and confidential information by e-mail. Make an appointment in advance if you want to meet the patient ombudsman.
