Lung Diseases
Respiratory Medicine
At Tays, we study and treat pulmonary and respiratory diseases. We diagnose lung tumours and treat respiratory disturbances during sleep. Outpatient health care provides routine diagnostics and treatment for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Diseases treated at Tays include the following, for example:
- refractory asthma
- severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- lung infections
- lung tissue diseases
- pulmonary fibrosis, i.e. fibrosis of the lungs
- sarcoidosis
- vascular infections in lungs
- sleep apnoea.
Tests and treatment at Tays
Patients are studied and treated mainly at the outpatient clinic. They may need imaging studies, respiratory function tests, endoscopies or ultrasound scans. When necessary, we take biopsies from lung and chest tissues as well as perform allergy tests. Sleep studies are carried out in a sleep laboratory or at the patient's home.
Patients requiring constant care or monitoring or who need to be isolated in order to prevent an infectious disease from spreading are treated and studied in the ward.
Some sleep apnoea patients are studied or treated at Tays Valkeakoski or Tays Sastamala Hospitals.
The majority of asthma patients are studied at Tays Allergy Centre.
Special expertise at Tays
Ultrasound-assisted bronchoscopies and assessments for sleep apnoea surgery are our special expertise.
